FAQ

What is pelvic physical therapy?

Pelvic physical therapy is a specialized area of physical therapy that focuses on the muscles, joints, and connective tissue in and around the pelvis. Pelvic Physical Therapy helps treat conditions such as pelvic pain, incontinence, prolapse, constipation, and dysfunction related to pregnancy and postpartum.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

Idaho allows direct access to physical therapy, which means you do not need a referral to begin treatment. However, it is important to consult with your provider regarding your symptoms and participate in routine preventative care exams and screenings.

What should I expect at my first visit?

Your first visit will include a detailed conversation about your symptoms, medical history, past treatment/testing and your goals for Physical Therapy.  I will provide education regarding anatomy and function of the pelvis, hips, spine and pelvic floor muscles.   An external orthopedic assessment will be performed next, and we will assess gait, posture, strength, ROM and as well as other specialized tests related to your symptoms. Finally, we will discuss and may offer an internal pelvic floor muscle exam depending on your symptoms, but only with your explicit consent.

Please allow for 90 minutes for the initial evaluation and 60 minutes for follow up sessions.

What is an internal pelvic floor assessment?

This is a gentle, manual examination of the pelvic floor muscles through the vaginal or rectal canal. It allows us to evaluate muscle tone, strength, coordination, and identify areas of pain or dysfunction.  This is not required and will only be performed following discussion and with your consent.

How many sessions will I need?

Each person’s symptoms and goals are unique.  Treatment plans are individualized based on symptoms, other medical conditions/history, and examination findings. Some patients see improvements in a few visits, while others with complex or long-standing conditions may need more ongoing care. Following your evaluation this will be discussed, and we will decide on a course of care together.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely is best—like workout clothes.  Loose fitting shorts are generally best to allow access to assess the hip/pelvis/low back and allows for treatment of the hip musculature when needed. If an internal exam is part of your visit, you’ll be appropriately draped and given privacy.

Is pelvic PT covered by insurance?

Palouse Pelvic Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy is not contracted with any insurance companies.  We are an out-of-network cash-based practice and do not accept insurance or bill insurance companies. We can, however, provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Can you see patients with Medicare/Medicaid?

No. Unfortunately, due to current Federal/State rules and regulations patients who are covered by Medicare cannot pay cash for Physical Therapy services. Therefore, we are regretfully unable to treat individuals who have Medicare/Medicaid/Medicare Advantage Plans as their health insurance.

Do you accept credit cards?

Yes, we accept credit cards, checks, and cash. Payment is due at the time of service.

Do you Accept HSA/FSA?

Yes! We provide Physical Therapy which is a qualified medical expense.
